Travel by car

Please note: These directions are more reliable than a GPS! (Old Bong Bong Way is a private road and is not recognised on all systems.)

From Sydney

Get onto the M5 at the first available opportunity and travel south (toward Canberra). It will become the Hume Freeway - stay on it until the Mittagong exit. Go through Mittagong to Bowral (a leftish turn at the lights in Mittagong) and straight through Bowral (either main street or by-pass will get you there), taking the Moss Vale turn at the large roundabout at the end of town. Go for 4 km (1 km past Chevalier College) and turn right into a private road called Old Bong Bong Way (just before a road junction on the left). The Research Farm (No 3) is through the second gate on the left (use the button to open and close the gate please!), leading to a very contemporary styled house. The doorbells will bark when you arrive!

From Canberra/Goulburn

Take the Illawarra Highway exit to Wollongong from the Hume Highway about 2 kms north of the Sutton Forest Service Centre (Shell with Maccas) and basically 'follow your nose' through Moss Vale. When the Illawarra Hwy turns right at a roundabout at the end of Moss Vale, keep going straight ahead toward Bowral. Go for 4 kms (1 km past The Briars Inn) and about 2 metres past a major road junction on the right (Eridge Park Road) you turn left into Old Bong Bong Way (a private road, immediately after a bushy wattle hedge). I'm through the second gate on the left (No 3, use the button to open and close the gate please! ) and up to the modern looking house where you will be enthusiastically welcomed by the resident (4-legged) doorbells.

From the Illawarra region

If you're coming from the northern end of Wollongong, take the Picton Road route through to the Hume Freeway, turn toward Goulburn/Canberra, then proceed as above.

If you're coming from the southern end of the Illawarra/ South Coast, follow or join the Illawarra Highway (up Macquarie Pass, or through Kangaroo Valley) until you reach a large roundabout at the beginning of Moss Vale. At the roundabout, turn right toward Bowral (where the highway turns left), go 4 kms (1 km past The Briars Inn) and then, about 2 metres past a major turn to the right (Eridge Park Rd) you turn left into Old Bong Bong Way. Go through the second gate on the left, etc.

Travel by train

The Research Farm is located between Bowral and Moss Vale stations (a few minutes drive to either) on the main southern line between Sydney and Melbourne. It is serviced from Sydney by Cityrail and Countrylink trains. Cityrail is a suburban style service. No bookings are required and fares are low. The best route is to travel via the East Hills line to Campbelltown, then change to the Southern Highlands train (a small diesel, usually across the same platform); occasionally a Cityrail diesel runs directly from Central country platforms to the Southern Highlands. Countrylink trains run twice each day between Sydney and Melbourne, and twice between Sydney and Canberra.  They cost a little more, and (in theory) bookings are required (with the problem that you can’t book for Bowral from Sydney earlier than the week before travel because there is a Cityrail service). For timetable information consult the relevant web sites: http://www.cityrail.nsw.gov.au/ or http://www.countrylink.info/  I can usually arrange pick-up from Bowral, Burradoo or Moss Vale stations, or taxis are available at Bowral and Moss Vale (note: taxi drivers will need clear directions).
